According to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s 2023 Crash Facts report, Illinois recorded 1,169 fatal crashes resulting in 1,269 deaths statewide. While the report does not isolate hit-and-run fatalities in the same way as the 2016 national study, Illinois officials note that pedestrians and bicyclists remain disproportionately represented in fatal hit-and-run incidents.

Nationally, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety continues to report that a hit-and-run crash occurs every 43 seconds, and the long-term trend shows a 60% increase in such crashes since 2009, with most victims being pedestrians and cyclists.
