This tragic accident underscores the dangers that pedestrians face every day in this country.

Michigan recorded 183 pedestrian deaths in 2023, a 6% increase from 173 in 2022, according to the Michigan State Police. This represents the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in 10 years. Pedestrian-involved crashes rose by 11%, with 2,114 crashes in 2023 and 1,897 in 2022.

The Governors Highway Safety Association says one reason for the increase is many people are driving SUVs and pickups and it’s harder for them to see pedestrians. This is part of a national trend that’s seen a nearly 60% increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2013.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
