Chevrolet Impala Strikes James Eleby Jr. in Greensboro Crash

GREENSBORO, NC (May 20, 2026) — A 59-year-old Greensboro resident died Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while crossing West Wendover Avenue in Guilford County, according to the Greensboro Police Department.

Authorities identified the victim as James Eleby Jr.

Police said the collision occurred around 2:23 p.m. as Eleby Jr. was walking northbound across West Wendover Avenue between Spring Garden Street and South Holden Road. Investigators said he was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet Impala.

Emergency responders transported Eleby Jr. to a local hospital with serious injuries. He later succumbed to those injuries.

Officials have not released information regarding the driver involved in the crash. The Greensboro Police Department continues to investigate the incident.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The Greensboro Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the collision.

Pedestrians such as Eleby Jr. generally have the right of way while using sidewalks and crossing roadways. Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and other designated walking areas, and bicyclists are expected to follow similar rules.

According to official reports, 345 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2022, representing a 12% increase from the 307 pedestrian fatalities reported in 2021.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, said incidents like this are frequently linked to distracted driving, speeding, negligence, and motorists failing to yield to pedestrians.

“Having the right resources is critical when investigating a pedestrian accident and establishing liability,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Every pedestrian crash presents unique circumstances that require a thorough review. Acting quickly is essential so evidence can be preserved and analyzed efficiently. Attorneys can work with expert witnesses, conduct background investigations, and examine available insurance coverage. These steps are important in helping families pursue justice and compensation after losing a loved one,” added Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“In many situations, pedestrians have the right of way while crossing a roadway or intersection, even when a marked crosswalk is not present. Drivers are responsible for yielding to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

Pending the investigation, the family of James Eleby Jr. may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek compensation for emotional suffering, loss of companionship, and other damages resulting from a tragic accident such as this one.

“Families grieving the loss of a loved one are often faced with complicated legal matters during an already difficult time. An attorney can provide guidance and support while helping protect the family’s legal rights and pursuit of fair compensation,” Formica added.
