Caleb Burge Killed, Rodolfo Garay Jr. Hurt in Sabine Pass Collision

SABINE PASS, TX (May 18, 2026) — A 21-year-old man was killed and another passenger critically injured Monday afternoon in a devastating passenger van crash on Highway 87 in Sabine Pass, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. when a Chevrolet Express van traveling northwest crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a southeastbound Prevost passenger bus.

The violent impact forced the van into a roadside ditch. Caleb Burge suffered severe injuries and was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he later died.

Rodolfo Garay Jr. was also injured in the collision and remains in critical condition at a hospital, officials said.

Investigators confirmed that five people, including the van driver, lost their lives in the crash. DPS continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help support Burge’s family. He is survived by his wife and two young sons, ages two and one.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Burge’s grieving family is now coping with the heartbreaking loss of their loved one.

During times like these, families are often encouraged to seek legal guidance. An attorney can serve as an advocate by independently gathering evidence related to the crash and dealing with insurance companies, which may attempt to pressure families into accepting settlements that are significantly lower than the true value of a wrongful death claim.

“Insurance companies are financially motivated to minimize payouts and often fail to consider the long-term impact and suffering victims and their families endure,” said Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“Attorneys work diligently to protect their clients’ rights and help ensure they are treated fairly and respectfully throughout the legal process,” added Bond, a national analyst with Accident Injury News.

Every year, approximately 36,000 people are killed and another 1.9 million are injured in motor vehicle accidents across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, leading causes of fatal crashes include speeding, impaired driving involving alcohol or drugs, lane violations, failure to yield, and distracted driving.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Caleb Burge may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand the tremendous difficulties families face after losing a loved one, and protecting their legal rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s interests remain protected. Relatives of wrongful death victims may pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.”

Additionally, Rodolfo Garay Jr. may be eligible to pursue a personal injury claim. Formica noted that the emotional and financial strain caused by a serious injury can affect every aspect of a victim’s life, including family responsibilities, employment, finances, and overall well-being.
