Bronx collision: Francisco Garcia killed in hit-and-run

BRONX, NY (April 4, 2026) – A 71-year-old man died following a hit-and-run collision crash early Saturday morning in the Soundview section of the Bronx.

According to the New York Police Department, Francisco Garcia was walking along the westbound shoulder of the Bruckner Expressway near White Plains Road at approximately 4:45 a.m. when he was struck by a 2020 Kia Telluride.

The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Garcia was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities said he had been reported missing earlier in the week.

The vehicle involved in the crash was later discovered abandoned near Underhill Avenue and Watson Avenue.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

According to NYPD collision data published on NYC Open Data, hit-and-run crashes continue to be a serious and often deadly problem across New York City, with thousands of cases reported annually involving pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Despite ongoing safety efforts through Vision Zero and enhanced enforcement measures, many motorists still flee after causing severe injuries or fatalities. In 2024, the NYPD documented more than 5,000 hit-and-run crashes involving injuries, including over 40 deaths, highlighting the continued difficulty in identifying and prosecuting offenders.

These types of incidents frequently occur in busy traffic corridors and tend to impact vulnerable road users the most. Investigations can be complex and prolonged, and only a limited number of cases ultimately lead to arrests, leaving many families without closure.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that in situations like this, it is crucial to conduct an independent investigation promptly to safeguard a victim’s rights.

“Having the necessary resources is vital to properly investigate a hit-and-run crash and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must all be carefully evaluated. These steps are essential in helping families pursue justice and financial compensation after losing a loved one.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Francisco Garcia may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral costs, loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages.

“An incident qualifies as wrongful death when a negligent or wrongful act leads to a person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “When fatal crashes result from reckless behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, or impairment, surviving family members often have the right to take legal action against the at-fault party.”
