Brandon Stephens killed in Walton chain accident, GSP reports

WALTON, GA, (April 22, 2026) – A chain-reaction crash in a Walton County construction zone Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of a 37-year-old man, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Authorities said the crash occurred around 3 p.m. on Georgia Highway 20 near Center Hill Church Road. A driver operating a white Chevrolet Silverado was reportedly distracted while approaching stopped traffic and failed to slow down in time.

The Silverado struck the rear of a gray Toyota 4Runner driven by Brandon Stephens, 37. The impact pushed Stephens’ vehicle into a silver Ford Escape before the 4Runner spun off the roadway, overturned, and came to rest upright in a private driveway.

The Ford Escape was then forced across eastbound lanes and onto the south shoulder, where it collided with a gray Honda Pilot. That vehicle was subsequently pushed into a black Jeep Wrangler.

Stephens was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado faces multiple charges, including second-degree vehicular homicide, distracted driving, and following too closely.

The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team continues to investigate the incident.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

In 2018, nearly 3,000 fatal accidents in the United States were linked to distracted driving, according to data from the Insurance Information Institute. That number accounted for 5.2 percent of all fatal crashes recorded that year, highlighting the dangers of inattention behind the wheel.

Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal, explained that distracted driving includes more than just texting while driving. Actions such as talking on the phone, eating, interacting with passengers, adjusting controls, or using in-car technology can all divert attention and increase crash risk.

Bond stressed that even a brief moment of distraction can lead to devastating consequences when operating a vehicle.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Brandon Stephens may choose to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose a loved one in such incidents can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages.

“The stress and grief following the loss of a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and it is essential that their rights are protected. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help ensure that the family’s legal interests are fully represented.”
