Bloomington Intersection Crash Kills Motorcyclist Matthew Moritz

BLOOMINGTON, IL, January 07, 2026 – A motorcycle crash involving an SUV claimed the life of a Bloomington man Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Authorities said the collision occurred at approximately 3:12 p.m. at the intersection of East Oakland Avenue and Old Farm Road. Matthew J. Moritz, 40, was riding the motorcycle when it struck an SUV.

Moritz sustained critical injuries and was transported to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Bloomington Police Department said the McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team and the McLean County Coroner’s Office are assisting with the investigation, which remains ongoing.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable motorists on the road, as reflected in federal safety data. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,985 motorcyclists were killed on U.S. roadways in 2018. Motorcyclist fatalities occurred 28 times more often than deaths among passenger vehicle occupants.

Candice Bond, an experienced motorcycle accident attorney, said an independent investigation is essential to help preserve critical evidence for a victim.

“Beyond the initial police report, an attorney will thoroughly examine factors that may have contributed to the collision,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “Legal counsel has the ability to retain expert witnesses, perform driver background checks, locate witnesses, and review applicable insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately guide a grieving family through this difficult process while protecting their legal rights and best interests, and helping ensure accountability when traffic laws are violated.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Matthew Moritz may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand what families are forced to endure during these difficult times, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and work to ensure that a family’s legal rights and best interests are fully protected,” Formica added.
