Autumn Perez fatally struck in Chicago truck accident on South Western Ave

CHICAGO, IL, (April 20, 2026) – A 29-year-old Romeoville woman was killed Monday evening in a pedestrian crash involving a semi-truck on Chicago’s Southwest Side, according to police.

Authorities said Autumn Perez was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer around 6:10 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Western Avenue in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 35-year-old driver of the truck, a resident of Hickory Hills, remained at the scene. No further details have been released as the investigation continues.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents unit is handling the case.

FATAL SEMI-TRUCK ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The Chicago Police’s Major Accidents unit is investigating the accident and working to determine what led to the semi-truck striking Perez, leaving her family grieving.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), multiple factors can contribute to semi-truck crashes, including brake defects, speeding, prescription drug use, unfamiliarity with roadways, lane drifting, improper maneuvering, and driver fatigue.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, noted that in cases like this, it is crucial to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of a victim’s family.

“Tractor-trailer crashes are often complex, with many potential contributing factors,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “An experienced attorney can help protect grieving families from trucking companies, which often deploy their own investigators and have extensive resources to defend negligent drivers. Legal counsel can assist by securing expert witnesses, reviewing driver histories, locating witnesses, and analyzing insurance coverage, while guiding families through the legal process.”

Sadly, statistics show that a person is killed or seriously injured every 15 minutes in accidents involving semi-trucks. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data indicates that approximately 5,000 people die in such crashes annually.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending results of the investigation, the family of Autumn Perez may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of love and companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic incident.

“The emotional and financial impact after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal and also a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News. “We understand the challenges families face, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help safeguard their legal rights and best interests.”
