Austin pedestrian crash claims life of Ja’Corian Helen, APD reports

Texas recorded 808 pedestrian fatalities and 5,924 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2023, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The agency reports that pedestrian deaths increased by 22 percent between 2019 and 2023, highlighting increasing risks for pedestrians across the state.

Although pedestrians are involved in only 1% of all Texas traffic crashes, they account for 19% of all roadway deaths. Common contributing factors include drivers failing to yield the right-of-way and inattentive driving.

The Governors Highway Safety Association notes that the growing popularity of SUVs and pickup trucks may contribute to the trend, as these vehicles can make it more difficult to see pedestrians. This reflects a broader national pattern, with pedestrian fatalities rising nearly 60% since 2013.
