Passenger Ashley Kornegay killed in Tuscaloosa County SUV accident

TUSCALOOSA, AL, (April 18, 2026) — A 36-year-old woman lost her life in a single-vehicle crash late Saturday night in Tuscaloosa County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

Troopers said the accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Alabama 216, approximately five miles east of Tuscaloosa. A 2007 GMC Yukon reportedly left the roadway and collided with a tree.

Ashley M. Kornegay, a passenger in the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 35, and a 19-year-old passenger sustained injuries and were transported to DCH Regional Medical Center. A 14-year-old passenger was also injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Numerous factors contribute to the rise in traffic fatalities, but driver behavior remains a primary concern—including speeding, impaired driving, and distractions such as cellphone use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 8,055 lives were lost in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2025.

While the cause and liability of this crash are still under review, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation.

“In addition to the diligent efforts of law enforcement, an attorney can re-examine key witnesses, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records of any potentially liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time is critical in cases like these, and it is essential that the victim’s family ensures all evidence is preserved and carefully analyzed.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Ashley Kornegay may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages following a tragic accident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families endure during such difficult times, and protecting their rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation and help ensure their legal interests are safeguarded.”
