PONTIAC, Mich. — A man died and a woman sustained injuries Sunday when their all-terrain vehicle crashed into an SUV at Pennsylvania Avenue and Melrose Street.
The crash occurred just before 5 p.m., the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said. A preliminary investigation shows the operator of a 1987 Yamaha ATV traveling east on Pennsylvania disregarded a stop sign at Melrose Street.
Anthony Thomas Cowgill, 25, of Flat Rock, struck a 2020 GMC Terrain heading north as it passed through the intersection. Cowgill carried a passenger, a 31-year-old Macon, Ga., woman. Police said the ATV was not legal for on-road use.
A 37-year-old Pontiac woman drove the GMC. Medics transported Cowgill to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. His passenger was also taken to a hospital and remains in stable condition.
The SUV’s driver wore her seatbelt and escaped injury in the crash. Officials determined neither Cowgill nor his passenger wore helmets during the collision.
The crash remains under investigation.
