Ana Reyes charged in Santa Fe deadly DUI pedestrian collision

SANTA FE, NM, (April 19, 2026) – A pedestrian was fatally struck early Sunday morning in Santa Fe, and authorities have arrested a suspect on DUI-related charges.

According to police, the crash occurred at approximately 2:05 a.m. near the intersection of Agua Fria Street and Cottonwood Drive. The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was hit by a vehicle driven by Ana Reyes.

Emergency responders transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Officers at the scene reported that Reyes showed signs of impairment and was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Reyes has been charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing.

FATAL DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Impaired drivers often strike pedestrians because alcohol and drugs can affect judgment, slow reaction times, and reduce coordination.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 30 people die each day in the United States due to drunk-driving crashes—equivalent to one death every 50 minutes. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that drugs other than alcohol contribute to about 18 percent of motor vehicle driver fatalities nationwide.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, shared insight regarding incidents of this nature.

“Separate from any criminal charges, a victim’s family may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News.

“In addition to the thorough work conducted by law enforcement, an attorney can revisit key witnesses, review surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and text records of the liable party. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide a family through this difficult time while protecting their legal rights and ensuring accountability for impaired driving.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of the victim killed in this accident may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand the challenges families face after such a devastating loss, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are represented. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic incident.”
