Abbi Aular dies after SUV and pickup collide in Austin TX

AUSTIN, TX, (May 03, 2026) – A 2-year-old girl died and several others were injured Sunday night in a two-vehicle collision on South Lamar Boulevard, according to the Austin Police Department.

Officials said the crash occurred at approximately 9:54 p.m. in the 2700 block of S. Lamar Boulevard involving a pickup truck and an SUV.

Two-year-old Abbi Sofia Romero Aular was a passenger in the SUV and was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. She was later pronounced dead.

A second passenger in the SUV also suffered serious injuries, while others involved in the crash sustained minor injuries.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck, Keegan Shirley, was arrested at the scene and charged with intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit. The investigation remains ongoing.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Texas continues to face a significant number of alcohol-related crashes each year, with impaired driving contributing to a large share of roadway fatalities. Thousands of injuries and over a thousand deaths are reported annually due to intoxicated driving incidents across the state.

An independent investigation is often necessary to examine additional contributing factors, including toxicology results and driver behavior leading up to the crash.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, said cases like this require thorough investigation beyond the initial police report.

“Separate from criminal charges, a victim may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” Bond explained. “In addition to law enforcement findings, an attorney can re-interview witnesses, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone and electronic records from those involved. This helps ensure accountability while protecting the rights of those affected.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Abbi Aular may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims in fatal crashes can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, funeral expenses, and other damages resulting from the tragedy.

“The emotional impact on families after losing a child in an accident is unimaginable,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the pain families endure, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will closely follow the investigation and work to safeguard the family’s legal interests,” Formica added.
