Thomas and Mary Backes injured in St. Joseph Township collision

ST. JOSEPH, MN — November 1, 2026 Two St. Joseph residents were injured Sunday morning following a collision involving two vehicles on County Road 75 in St. Joseph Township, according to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

Thomas Backes, 74, and Mary Backes, 75, were traveling in an SUV when another vehicle entered their path, resulting in a collision at approximately 9:45 a.m.

Authorities reported that the other motorist had initially turned onto County Road 134, which was closed because of construction near the new Stearns County Justice Center. The driver then attempted to turn around and return to County Road 75.

During the maneuver, the vehicle pulled into the path of the westbound SUV, causing the two vehicles to collide.

Mary Backes was identified as the SUV’s driver, while Thomas Backes was riding as a passenger. Both residents were transported by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital for medical treatment.

The other motorist, a 50-year-old St. Cloud resident, was not reported to have requested medical assistance at the scene. Deputies issued the driver a citation for failing to yield the right-of-way.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is examining the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the other driver’s actions before entering County Road 75. Investigators will consider the construction-related road closure, vehicle movements, right-of-way requirements and other available evidence to establish how the crash occurred.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasizes the importance of a thorough and independent investigation following serious roadway collisions.

Bond explains that, in cases such as this, reviewing physical evidence, collecting witness accounts and examining available surveillance footage can help clarify the sequence of events. Investigators may also review relevant vehicle and electronic records when appropriate to determine whether a driver’s actions contributed to the collision.

She further highlights the importance of preserving time-sensitive evidence. Early documentation of the scene, vehicle damage and witness statements can help establish an accurate account of the incident and assist in evaluating potential liability.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Depending on the investigation’s findings, injured individuals may have grounds to explore a personal injury claim against a party determined to be responsible for the collision.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, notes that injuries resulting from vehicle accidents can create significant challenges beyond the immediate medical treatment. Recovery may involve ongoing healthcare expenses, interruptions to employment, financial difficulties and changes to everyday activities.

Formica explains that, in cases such as this, a careful assessment of medical documentation, treatment expenses and other accident-related losses can be important when evaluating a potential injury claim.

He also highlights the importance of understanding insurance procedures and settlement offers before making decisions. A complete review of the available evidence and documented damages can help injured individuals understand their options and determine whether proposed compensation adequately addresses their losses.
