Dean Butcher fatally struck by vehicle in Salem bicycle accident

SALEM, OR — October 31, 2026 A 56-year-old Salem resident lost his life Saturday afternoon after a vehicle collided with his bicycle at the intersection of 25th Street Southeast and State Street, according to the Salem Police Department.

The victim, identified as Dean Edward Butcher, was riding westbound when a northbound vehicle traveling on 25th Street Southeast attempted to make a right turn at a red light onto State Street. During the maneuver, the vehicle struck Butcher shortly after 3 p.m.

Emergency responders transported Butcher to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and reportedly sustained no injuries. Authorities have not announced any further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police confirmed that the incident remains under investigation.

BICYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

The Salem Police Department is working to establish the complete sequence of events that led to the fatal bicycle collision. Investigators will likely examine the vehicle’s movements, traffic signals, the driver’s turning maneuver, and the cyclist’s position on the roadway.

Determining whether the driver properly observed the cyclist before making the right turn will be an important part of the investigation. Physical evidence, potential surveillance footage, witness accounts, and the official accident report may help authorities reconstruct the collision.

National legal analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, emphasizes the importance of conducting an independent investigation in serious bicycle accidents. In cases such as this, reviewing roadway conditions, driver behavior, available insurance coverage, and other contributing circumstances can help establish how the collision occurred.

Bond’s legal perspective also highlights the importance of preserving time-sensitive evidence and obtaining independent expert evaluations when necessary. Accident Injury News recognizes that a thorough investigation can help clarify potential liability and ensure that relevant details are not overlooked.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,105 bicyclists were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2022, representing an 11% increase compared with 2021. These figures demonstrate the serious safety risks cyclists face when sharing roadways with motor vehicles.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the findings of the official investigation, Dean Butcher’s surviving family members may have grounds to explore a wrongful death claim if negligence is established.

Depending on the circumstances and applicable Oregon law, eligible family members may be able to pursue compensation for certain losses associated with the death, including financial damages, loss of companionship, and other legally recoverable expenses.

National legal analyst Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, emphasizes that wrongful death cases involve significant emotional and financial challenges for surviving families. In cases such as this, understanding the available legal options and protecting the family’s interests throughout the claims process are important considerations.

An experienced wrongful death attorney can review the available evidence, assess potential liability, communicate with insurance companies, and explain the legal remedies that may be available under state law.

Accident Injury News encourages a careful review of the official findings before any conclusions are reached regarding responsibility for the fatal collision.
