Richard Geiger fatally struck by train on Meridian Ave in Puyallup

PUYALLUP, WA — October 21, 2026 A 59-year-old man using an electric wheelchair died after being struck by a BNSF train in downtown Puyallup on Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.

Richard Ralph Geiger was hit just before 1:50 p.m. while attempting to cross the tracks at 201 N. Meridian Avenue. The Pierce County Medical Examiner confirmed his identity. He died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Prior to the fatal incident, the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission had received two complaints describing the crossing surface at the North Meridian intersection as “rough to travel.” Puyallup police are investigating and ask anyone with information to call 253-770-3343.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Train-vehicle and pedestrian collisions can stem from multiple factors, including operator error, track or signal problems, mechanical failures, or conditions at the crossing itself. National Transportation Safety Board data show roughly 1,000 people die in train-related incidents across the United States each year. Investigators in this case are expected to review whether the crossing provided adequate safety for pedestrians and wheelchair users.

National legal analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that in cases such as this, families benefit from an independent review conducted promptly by experienced counsel. “A skilled attorney can protect a grieving family from powerful train companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent party,” Bond said. Early preservation of evidence, she explained, helps ensure that critical details about the crossing surface, warning devices, and train operations are not lost.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation, relatives of Richard Ralph Geiger may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death action. Survivors in such matters can seek compensation for loss of companionship, the pain and suffering the victim endured, and the emotional distress experienced by the family.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, observed that in cases such as this the emotional toll is often profound. “The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” Formica said. “A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that the victim’s legal rights and best interests are protected.”

Accident Injury News extends condolences to the family and friends of Richard Ralph Geiger.
