Dominic Jack McGrath arrested after fatal North Charleston crash

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC — October 23, 2026 A fatal head-on collision on Carner Avenue near Rivers Avenue in North Charleston, South Carolina, resulted in the arrest of Dominic Jack McGrath, 46, of Summerville, according to the North Charleston Police Department.

Police responded to the two-vehicle crash shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Friday. One driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Charleston County EMS. Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased driver in the available reporting.

Investigators reported preliminary evidence suggesting McGrath was speeding and crossed the centerline before his vehicle collided with the other car. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit assisted with the investigation, along with the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

McGrath was charged with reckless homicide and booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center. The allegations remain subject to the legal process, and the investigation is ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The North Charleston Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision, including the reported speed of the vehicle and the crossing of the centerline. Investigators will need to assess the available evidence to establish how the crash occurred and determine the factors that contributed to the impact.

In cases such as this, a comprehensive investigation may involve examining vehicle damage, roadway conditions, physical evidence, witness accounts and any available surveillance footage. These findings can help investigators reconstruct the collision and evaluate whether a driver’s actions contributed to the fatal outcome.

National legal analysts Candice Bond and Stefano Formica emphasize the importance of carefully examining the evidence in serious motor vehicle cases. An independent review may help clarify the sequence of events and identify any relevant contributing factors. These are general considerations for fatal crash investigations, not conclusions about the evidence in this particular case.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

A fatal motor vehicle collision can leave surviving family members facing emotional distress and unexpected financial responsibilities. Depending on the circumstances and applicable South Carolina law, eligible relatives may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence contributed to the death.

Potential damages in a qualifying case may include funeral and burial expenses, lost financial support and other legally recoverable losses. The availability and amount of compensation depend on the evidence, the applicable law and the individual circumstances of the case.

Candice Bond and Stefano Formica note that preserving relevant evidence and reviewing available insurance coverage can be important after a fatal collision. In cases such as this, a qualified attorney can help eligible family members understand their legal options, assess potential claims and navigate the claims process.

The criminal charge against McGrath is separate from any potential civil claim. The outcome of a civil case would depend on the evidence and applicable legal standards.
