Kai Yoo Dies After Fatal E-Scooter Crash in Baytown Township

BAYTOWN TOWNSHIP, MN — October 7, 2026 Kai Yoo, an 11-year-old student at St. Croix Preparatory Academy, died three days after being struck by an SUV while riding an electric scooter in Baytown Township, Minnesota. The collision occurred at the intersection of 40th Street North and Paradise Avenue North, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities reported that the crash happened at approximately 8:15 a.m. on October 7. Yoo was riding north on Paradise Avenue North when an eastbound Audi Q5, driven by a 57-year-old woman, struck him at the intersection.

Yoo was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Emergency responders transported him to Regions Hospital in St. Paul before he was transferred to Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, where he died on October 10.

The tragedy has deeply affected the St. Croix Preparatory Academy community. In a statement, the school described Yoo as a valued member of its community and extended condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew him.

A GoFundMe fundraiser was also established to help Yoo’s family during this difficult time.

FATAL E-SCOOTER ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal collision. Investigators will need to establish how the crash occurred and determine whether any contributing factors played a role.

A thorough review may include the vehicles’ movements, the intersection’s layout, visibility, road conditions, available traffic-control devices, and physical evidence from the scene. Accident reconstruction specialists may also help determine the sequence of events.

Candice Bond, a national legal analyst and managing partner at Bond Legal, has emphasized the importance of an independent investigation in serious e-scooter crashes. In cases such as this, a careful examination of the available evidence can help clarify whether driver negligence, roadway conditions, visibility concerns, or other factors contributed to the collision.

Investigators’ findings will be important in establishing the circumstances surrounding Yoo’s death. The available information does not establish fault, and conclusions should await the results of the official investigation.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Yoo’s surviving family members may wish to explore whether a wrongful death claim is available under Minnesota law. Eligibility and any potential recovery would depend on the circumstances of the collision, the evidence collected, and the applicable legal requirements.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has highlighted the importance of protecting families’ interests after fatal accidents. In cases such as this, a wrongful death attorney may review the investigation, explain the family’s legal options, and help determine whether the available evidence supports a claim.

Depending on the facts and applicable law, recoverable damages may include certain losses associated with the death, including loss of companionship and other legally recognized harms. The availability and calculation of damages depend on the specific circumstances and governing law.

The family’s potential legal options remain separate from the ongoing investigation. Any determination of liability would require supporting evidence and an assessment under applicable Minnesota law.

Accident Injury News extends its condolences to Kai Yoo’s family, friends, classmates, and the St. Croix Preparatory Academy community.
