Jim Merik killed in Aeneas Valley plane crash, according to OCSO

AENEAS VALLEY, WA — October 10, 2026 Jim Merik died after a small aircraft crashed in a remote area of Okanogan County, Washington, while traveling from British Columbia to Idaho. Search-and-rescue crews located the wreckage near Tonasket the following afternoon, on October 11, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

The aircraft, a 1976 Piper Cub, departed Penticton, British Columbia, with Grangeville, Idaho, as its destination. During the flight, the pilot lost communication with Seattle Center air traffic control, prompting concern about the aircraft and its occupants.

The pilot’s daughter subsequently contacted the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office to report them missing. Search personnel began looking for the plane using its last known radar positions and information obtained through cellphone forensics to help identify possible search locations.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, authorities discovered the wreckage in Aeneas Valley near Tonasket. Merik and the pilot, identified as 61-year-old Nicholas Grachanin, were found dead inside the aircraft. Their families were notified.

The search involved WSDOT Aviation Emergency Services, the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, Okanogan County Emergency Management, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office air support unit and ground personnel from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation.

Officials have not established what caused the aircraft to crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is responsible for investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

FATAL PLANE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Investigators are expected to examine available flight information, communications with air traffic control, aircraft maintenance records, pilot-related factors and weather conditions to determine what happened. The investigation may also assess whether a mechanical problem or another contributing factor played a role in the crash.

The aircraft’s last known radar position and other information used during the search may help investigators reconstruct the flight’s final stages. However, the precise cause of the crash remains undetermined, and no specific contributing factor should be treated as confirmed before investigators release their findings.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the investigation’s findings and the applicable law, eligible surviving family members may wish to consult a qualified attorney about whether a wrongful death claim is available. Potential legal issues could include whether negligence or a mechanical defect contributed to the crash and whether a responsible party can be identified.

National legal analysts Candice Bond and Stefano Formica have experience discussing personal injury and wrongful death issues in general legal commentary. In cases such as this, families may benefit from understanding how an independent investigation, technical evidence and a review of potential liability can inform their legal options.

A wrongful death attorney can explain which relatives may be eligible to bring a claim, what evidence may be required and what categories of damages may be recoverable under the applicable law. Depending on the circumstances, damages could include funeral expenses, financial support losses and the loss of a loved one’s care or companionship.

No conclusion about liability or the availability of compensation can be reached from the currently reported facts alone. Any potential claim would depend on the investigation, the evidence and the laws governing the case.
