James Ange killed after pedestrian crash in Waukegan

WAUKEGAN, IL — October 04, 2026 — A 56-year-old man was fatally struck by a pickup truck Sunday evening at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Baldwin Avenue in Waukegan, authorities said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the pedestrian as James Ange, who had previously lived in Fox Lake. According to officials, the collision occurred at approximately 8:41 p.m. when a Ford pickup truck struck Ange.

Emergency responders transported Ange to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Authorities have not released additional information about what led to the crash, and the circumstances surrounding the pedestrian-vehicle collision remain under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The Waukegan Police Department is continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision at Grand Avenue and Baldwin Avenue.

Investigators have not publicly disclosed additional details regarding the vehicle’s speed, the pedestrian’s movements immediately before impact, roadway conditions, or whether any other factors contributed to the crash.

Information from witnesses, traffic cameras, physical evidence and the responding officers’ investigation could help establish what happened in the moments leading up to the collision.

Pedestrian fatalities remain a significant traffic-safety concern across the United States. Data cited by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicate that 84% of pedestrian deaths in 2023 occurred in urban areas, compared with 59% in 1975. The increase has been associated with several factors, including changes in vehicle size and roadway design.

National legal analyst Candice Bond, a managing partner at Bond Legal, has emphasized that pedestrian collisions require a careful and independent review of the available evidence. In cases such as this, determining whether a driver failed to yield, whether visibility or roadway conditions played a role, and whether other contributing circumstances existed can be important when evaluating the circumstances of a fatal crash.

Bond has also stressed that evidence can become more difficult to preserve as time passes. For families dealing with a fatal pedestrian collision, an investigation may therefore involve reviewing available photographs, surveillance footage, witness accounts, vehicle evidence and official crash documentation.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The circumstances of Ange’s death may potentially support a wrongful death claim, depending on the evidence developed during the investigation and whether another party is determined to have acted negligently.

National legal analyst Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, has explained that motorists generally have a duty to exercise reasonable care around pedestrians and to yield when required by traffic laws and circumstances.

In cases such as this, a wrongful death case can involve examining whether the driver acted reasonably, whether traffic rules were followed, and whether the evidence establishes that negligence contributed to the fatal injuries.

Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, eligible surviving family members in a wrongful death action may seek compensation for losses associated with the death, which can include lost financial support, loss of companionship, funeral-related expenses and emotional suffering.

Formica has also noted that families should be cautious about quickly resolving a serious fatal-accident claim before the full value and circumstances of the case have been evaluated. Insurance-related discussions and settlement decisions can have significant consequences, making a complete review of the available evidence important.
