Tara Frits Injured in Lubbock Scooter Crash | LPD

LUBBOCK, TX — October 06, 2026 A 23-year-old woman was seriously injured Tuesday evening after an electric scooter and an SUV collided at an intersection in Lubbock, according to the Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit.

Tara Frits was riding an electric scooter when the collision occurred near 98th Street and Avenue U at approximately 7:30 p.m.

According to the preliminary police investigation, the SUV was traveling west in the right lane of the 2000 block of 98th Street. At the same time, Frits was traveling south along the 9700 block of Avenue U on an e-scooter.

The two vehicles collided at the intersection for reasons that had not been determined at the time of the initial report. Frits sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported to University Medical Center for medical treatment.

The driver of the SUV and a passenger inside the vehicle were not injured, authorities said.

Police have not released additional details about what may have led to the collision. The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Scooter riders have considerably less physical protection than occupants of larger vehicles, meaning a collision with an SUV or other heavier vehicle can result in significant injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission previously estimated 164 e-scooter deaths and 193 e-bike deaths between 2017 and 2023, highlighting the safety risks associated with these forms of transportation.

In cases such as this, determining exactly how the collision occurred can require more than simply reviewing the initial police report. National legal analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, has emphasized the importance of an independent investigation when the circumstances surrounding an injury crash remain under review.

Such an investigation can include speaking with witnesses again, examining available surveillance or traffic-camera footage and reviewing relevant records that could help establish what happened immediately before impact.

Investigators may also need to assess roadway conditions, the visibility of traffic signs, lighting at the intersection and other environmental factors. These details can help establish whether a roadway condition, visibility issue, driver action or another circumstance contributed to the collision.

For injured scooter riders, identifying all potentially relevant evidence is particularly important because the severity of the injuries can be substantially greater when a smaller vehicle or scooter comes into contact with a larger motor vehicle.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

The circumstances of the Lubbock collision will determine whether Frits has grounds for a personal injury claim. A final determination would depend on the findings of the police investigation, available evidence and the applicable Texas laws.

National legal analyst Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, has noted that the aftermath of a serious injury can affect many areas of a person’s life. Medical treatment, time away from work, household responsibilities, financial pressure and long-term changes in quality of life can all become concerns following a major accident.

In cases such as this, an attorney may assist an injured person in communicating with insurance companies and evaluating the potential value of a claim. Legal representation can also help ensure that medical expenses, lost income and other losses are properly documented while the circumstances of the collision are examined.

Insurance carriers may seek to resolve injury claims quickly, but an early settlement does not necessarily reflect the full extent of an injured person’s losses. A thorough evaluation of medical records, future treatment needs, lost earnings and other damages may be necessary before determining whether a proposed settlement is appropriate.

As the investigation continues, additional information could clarify how the scooter and SUV collided and whether any party may ultimately be found responsible for the injuries.
