Pedestrian killed in Vancouver DUI crash, according to police.

VANCOUVER, WA — October 5, 2026 A pedestrian was fatally struck and another seriously injured late Monday night when a vehicle driven by an alleged impaired motorist crashed at the intersection of Northeast Andresen Road and Northeast Van Mall Drive. Authorities identified the driver as Noah Merchant, who was taken into custody following the collision.

According to police, the incident unfolded around 9:45 p.m. A Jeep traveling southbound on Northeast Andresen Road reportedly ran a red light and collided with a Toyota RAV4 heading westbound on Northeast Van Mall Drive. The force of the impact caused the Jeep to overturn and then strike two pedestrians who were in the south crosswalk on Northeast Van Mall Drive.

A 34-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 43-year-old man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Merchant faces charges that include driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and reckless driving.

FATAL DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Impaired driving remains a persistent and deadly problem across Washington. Data from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission shows that impaired drivers were involved in at least half of all traffic fatalities in the state between 2019 and 2023. Roughly 300 people lose their lives each year in alcohol-related crashes, and more than 30,000 drivers have accumulated multiple DUI cases within a six-year span. Alcohol and other impairing substances commonly degrade judgment, blur vision, slow reaction times, and reduce coordination—factors that can turn routine intersections into scenes of tragedy.

National legal analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, explained that in cases such as this, the work of investigators and civil advocates often runs on parallel tracks. “Separate from the criminal charges, a victim’s family may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” Bond said. “In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and text records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a family during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights while ensuring that a drunk driver is held accountable for their reckless actions.”

Bond emphasized that thorough civil investigation can uncover additional evidence that strengthens accountability and supports surviving family members as they navigate both grief and practical needs.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, relatives of the woman who died may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. In cases such as this, family members can seek recovery for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and the emotional distress that follows a catastrophic, preventable crash.

Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal and a national legal analyst affiliated with Accident Injury News, noted the dual impact these losses create. “We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” Formica said. “If you have lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence, contact a wrongful death attorney and get the guidance needed to obtain the justice you deserve.”

The surviving pedestrian who was critically injured may also have the option to file a personal injury claim seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost income, and other damages tied to the crash.

Accident Injury News will continue to follow developments in the case as additional information becomes available from investigators.
