Alexander Pena killed in Hollister bicycle crash, according to Sheriff’s Office.

HOLLISTER, CA — October 4, 2026 — A 63-year-old Hollister resident died Sunday evening after a vehicle struck his bicycle at the intersection of Central Avenue and Westside Boulevard, the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Alexander Pena was riding his bicycle when the collision occurred around 5:26 p.m. American Medical Response medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle has not been publicly identified. Hollister police are leading the traffic investigation, while San Benito County sheriff’s deputies assisted with the coroner’s work. Pena’s body was transported to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office for examination to help establish the cause and manner of death. Authorities continue to gather information about the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Bicycle-motor vehicle collisions remain a serious public-safety concern across the United States. National data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show that 1,155 bicyclists lost their lives in crashes with motor vehicles in 2023. Fatalities that year peaked in the warmer months, with September, October, and July each accounting for about 11 percent of the total and August close behind at 10 percent. Larger vehicles such as SUVs and pickup trucks often present greater risks to cyclists because of their size, height, and blind spots.

National legal analysts stress the importance of a thorough, independent review in cases such as this. Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and an experienced bicycle-accident attorney, noted that bicyclists are among the most vulnerable road users and that multiple factors can contribute to a serious or fatal collision. “It is imperative to come to a determination of the exact cause of these types of accidents,” Bond said. “An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process.”

Bond added that early independent investigation helps preserve physical evidence, witness accounts, and electronic data that might otherwise degrade or disappear. Beyond the official police report, a legal team typically examines roadway conditions, vehicle characteristics, lighting, visibility, and any potential distractions or mechanical issues that may have played a role.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, emphasized the broader context of roadway safety. In cases such as this, he observed, families often face complex questions about liability, insurance limits, and the full sequence of events. Prompt professional attention can clarify those questions while evidence is still fresh.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the ongoing investigations, surviving family members of Alexander Pena may be able to pursue a wrongful-death claim. Such claims can address losses that include companionship, emotional distress, and other damages arising from a fatal incident of this nature.

Formica pointed out that the legal process after a sudden loss can feel overwhelming. “Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights,” he said. “An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time, and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”

Accident Injury News extends condolences to the family and friends of Alexander Pena.
