SAVANNAH, GA (March 23, 2026) – A 19-year-old woman was seriously injured when a police vehicle struck her car at a Savannah intersection, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Authorities said the crash occurred around 9 p.m. when a Savannah Police officer responding to a fight-in-progress call, with emergency lights and siren activated, failed to yield at E. Montgomery Crossroad and Varnedoe Drive.
The patrol vehicle collided with a blue Ford Mustang driven by Zikerria Nevels. She became trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by Chatham Fire personnel before being taken to a hospital.
Nevels sustained multiple fractures, including injuries to her pelvis, hip, ribs, and tailbone. She underwent surgery within 24 hours and faces a lengthy recovery that could last six to twelve months or longer.
The Savannah Police Department described the crash as a minor traffic accident. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
A fundraiser has been launched to assist with Nevels’ recovery.
