Yamhill County pedestrian collision kills Larry Mervin Jacobs, OSP says

YAMHILL, OR, (October 13, 2025) — Larry Joseph Mervin Jacobs, 66, of Newberg, tragically died Monday evening following a vehicle-pedestrian collision in Yamhill County, according to the Oregon State Police (OSP).

Authorities said the fatal crash occurred around 5:11 p.m. on Highway 240 near Northeast Tangen Road. Jacobs was reportedly walking on the roadway when a westbound Toyota RAV4 struck him.

Tragically, Jacobs sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The Toyota driver, a 47-year-old woman from Cornelius, remained at the scene and was not injured.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The OSP continues to investigate the incident and will determine what caused the Toyota driver to strike and kill Jacobs.

Motorists are required by law to yield to pedestrians, both in marked crosswalks and unmarked intersections. Drivers can also use their high beams when legally permitted to better illuminate roadways and spot pedestrians walking nearby.

Jacobs’ tragic death underscores the ongoing danger pedestrians face on U.S. roads.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), at least 7,508 pedestrians were killed in 2022 across the nation, based on data from every state except Oklahoma.

A variety of factors can contribute to fatal pedestrian crashes, including distracted driving, speeding, negligence, and failure to yield.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, emphasized that cases such as this require an independent investigation to preserve key evidence for the victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be thoroughly examined. These procedures are necessary to help those who have lost a loved one receive the justice they deserve.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Larry Joseph Mervin Jacobs may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“In most instances, pedestrians possess the right of way when crossing an intersection or a street, whether or not they are in a marked crosswalk. It is always a driver’s duty to yield,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

Formica added, “Grieving families of victims are often overwhelmed by the legal processes meant to protect their rights. An attorney can serve as a compassionate resource to help guide them through this difficult time and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”

“Although no amount of money can make up for the devastating loss of a loved one, it is important that the family be made aware of their rights and what they are entitled to under the law,” Formica said.
