MILWAUKEE, WI, (July 14, 2026) — An elderly man known in the neighborhood as “Wink” was fatally struck by a vehicle Tuesday night in Milwaukee, according to authorities.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as William G. Spears, 70, of Milwaukee. Officials said Spears was a well-known member of the local community.
According to Milwaukee police, the crash occurred around 9:20 p.m. at the intersection of North 12th Street and Atkinson Avenue. Spears was crossing the street in a wheelchair when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle.
Spears suffered life-threatening injuries and died while being transported to a hospital, authorities said.
Police said the driver remained at the scene following the collision and was taken into custody.
