William Douan dies after being struck in Mount Pleasant SC

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC, (April 17, 2026) – A Charleston man was killed Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle at a Mount Pleasant intersection, according to police.

Authorities said William Douan, 67, of Charleston, was hit at the intersection of W. Coleman Boulevard and Patriots Point Road at approximately 10 a.m. Emergency responders transported him to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m.

Officials have not released any information regarding the driver or possible contributing factors in the crash. The Mount Pleasant Police Department continues to investigate the incident.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Each year, pedestrian fatalities continue to rise across the United States. These incidents are often preventable when drivers remain attentive and cautious. The Governors Highway Safety Association reported that approximately 3,304 pedestrians were struck and killed in the first half of 2024 alone.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and lighting are all factors that must be carefully evaluated during an investigation,” Bond added. “These steps are essential to help families pursue justice after losing a loved one in a tragic collision.”

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes necessary to determine exactly how the crash occurred. These resources play a critical role in helping families seek compensation for damages resulting from a fatal pedestrian accident,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of William Douan may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” Formica said.

An attorney can provide guidance and support to families during this difficult time while ensuring their legal rights are protected.

“Insurance companies often attempt to encourage quick settlements for far less than the claim’s true value,” Formica noted. “However, an attorney will strongly advocate to ensure the family is treated fairly and receives appropriate compensation.”
