FRESNO, CA, (April 23, 2026) – A 25-year-old woman was killed late Thursday night after a suspected DUI crash sent a vehicle into the Friant-Kern Canal in Fresno County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities identified the victim as Wendy Rivera Gonzalez of Reedley.
Officials said that around 11:25 p.m., a vehicle was seen driving recklessly and kicking up dust in a dirt lot along Jensen Avenue, just east of Navelencia Avenue. The driver, a 22-year-old man, then mistakenly drove the vehicle into the canal.
Two occupants, including the driver and a male passenger, were able to escape the vehicle. Gonzalez, who was seated in the rear, was reported missing before being recovered from the canal and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was arrested at the scene and faces multiple charges, including DUI, causing injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
