Even when a driver believes they are not impaired, alcohol or drugs can significantly impact coordination and reaction time, increasing the likelihood of serious or fatal crashes. Over a 10-year period from 2012 to 2021, approximately 10,850 people lost their lives each year in drunk-driving accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
