WSP: Victor Ruiz Dead After I-5 Off-Ramp Crash in Lewis County

Lewis, WA, (July 03, 2026) — A 48-year-old Toledo man died in a two-vehicle crash Friday in Lewis County.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), Victor Ruiz was merging onto southbound Interstate 5 from the Exit 59 on-ramp at approximately 4:20 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by a 62-year-old man. The truck driver had reportedly failed to negotiate the curve while traveling southbound on the I-5 off-ramp. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that roughly 539,000 crashes occur each year as a result of improper lane changes.

A number of factors can contribute to merging accidents like the one that claimed Mr. Ruiz’s life, including a failure to yield the right of way, driver error, distracted driving, and merging too slowly.

No matter what the police investigation ultimately finds, Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the importance of retaining an attorney to conduct a separate, independent investigation into the crash to preserve evidence and protect a victim’s family’s rights.

“Beyond the thorough work carried out by law enforcement, an attorney can go back and speak with key witnesses, review any surveillance footage from the crash scene, and secure phone and text records of the at-fault party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Time is critical in cases like this one, and it’s essential that the victim’s family sees the evidence reviewed promptly.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the investigation’s findings, Victor Ruiz’s family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.

“We understand that losing a loved one is not just an emotional blow, but a financial one as well,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“Anyone who has lost a loved one because of someone else’s negligence should reach out to a wrongful death attorney for the guidance needed to pursue the justice they deserve.”
