LEONA, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a deadly crash that happened May 10 along Interstate 45 near milepost 157. Officials said two pickup trucks collided, killing five people and critically injuring one.
At 3:17 p.m., a 2016 Dodge pickup truck traveled southbound on I-45 when it veered off the roadway, struck a guardrail, crossed the median. There, it collided head-on with a 2023 Ford F-150 traveling north. Both vehicles caught fire.
Veronica Cerda, 53, Rebecca Cerda, 20, and Daniela Cerda, 18, suffered fatal injuries in the accident. Emergency personnel pronounced them dead at the scene. Two other occupants of the Ford also died.
A 43-year-old male from Dallas drove the Dodge. Emergency crews transported him to a hospital in Bryan with serious injuries.
Firefighters from Centerville and Leona worked to extinguish the flames and recover victims. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
