Tyler Pope Dies After Vehicle Strikes E-Scooter in Queens

QUEENS, NY, (August 28, 2026) – A St. Albans man died from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter in Queens, according to the New York Police Department.

NYPD officers said that 60-year-old Tyler Pope was traveling south on Farmers Boulevard at Merrick Boulevard at about 6:20 a.m. when a Ram ProMaster cargo van allegedly struck him while attempting to make a left turn.

The driver stopped immediately following the crash.

Pope was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for treatment. He later succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 16, according to police.

No arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the NYPD’s 113th Precinct.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Traditional moped and scooter accidents show concerning patterns, with NHTSA data indicating that riders are 35 times more at risk of fatal injury than passenger vehicle occupants. A multi-year study of 5,660 moped crashes found that more than 90% of drivers were uninsured and only 17% wore helmets. Researchers also found that alcohol and drug use increased the risk of severe injury by 209%.

Electric scooter accidents have increased dramatically, according to research from UC San Francisco, with injuries rising from 8,566 in 2017 to 56,847 in 2022 — a 45% annual increase. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports 169,300 emergency department visits related to e-scooters from 2017-2022, accounting for nearly 47% of all micromobility injuries.

Candice Bond, an experienced moped accident attorney, stressed the importance of promptly conducting an independent investigation to help preserve evidence in cases such as this.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important when investigating a moped or scooter accident case and demonstrating that there was negligence on the part of another party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney has the resources to interview expert witnesses, conduct defendant background checks, and review applicable insurance coverage,” added Bond, who is also a National Legal Analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The victim’s family may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” said Formica.

An attorney serving as an advocate can help guide a family compassionately through this difficult period while working to protect their rights.

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth,” Formica noted. “However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”
