Police: Truck crash kills bicyclist Thomas Turnbull on Akron Drive

WINSTON-SALEM, NC, January 07, 2026 — A Forsyth County man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a bicycle accident involving a tractor-trailer in Winston-Salem, authorities said.

Police reported that Thomas Griffith Turnbull, 75, was riding his bicycle in the 600 block of Akron Drive shortly after noon when he was struck by a 2015 Freightliner tractor-trailer. Investigators said Turnbull was traveling in the same direction as traffic at the time of the collision.

Turnbull was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been announced, and the Winston-Salem Police Department continues to investigate the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

In tractor-trailer crashes, it is critical that an independent investigation be conducted as quickly as possible to help protect the rights of a victim, said Candice Bond, an experienced tractor-trailer accident attorney.

“Crashes involving large commercial trucks are often complex, with multiple contributing factors,” said Bond, a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

Bond explained that trucking companies frequently dispatch their own investigators to crash scenes and have extensive resources to defend against claims involving negligent drivers.

“A qualified attorney can advocate for victims by retaining expert witnesses, reviewing driver histories, identifying witnesses, and analyzing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding victims and families through the legal process,” she added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The victim’s family may be able to seek compensation for losses including expenses related to the death, lost income, loss of companionship, and other resulting hardships.

“The death of a family member in an accident is tragic and deeply devastating,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

Formica noted that beyond the emotional toll, the loss of a loved one can create serious financial consequences, including lost wages and funeral expenses, which can place a significant burden on surviving family members.
