Truck Crash in Kenney TX Kills Curtis Allen Ford, DPS Says

KENNEY, TX, (April 20, 2026) — A man was killed and another person injured Monday morning in a tractor-trailer crash in Austin County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Authorities said the crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. along Highway 36 between Brenham and Bellville at Loop 497 in the Kenney community. Investigators reported that a 2026 Freightliner truck-tractor pulling a utility trailer was traveling southbound when it lost control on a wet roadway.

The truck reportedly hydroplaned, crossed into the northbound lanes, and collided with a 2023 Ford F-350. The impact caused the utility trailer to detach and overturn onto the pickup truck.

The driver of the Ford F-350, identified as 68-year-old Curtis Allen Ford of Bellville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Freightliner driver was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Brenham for treatment of injuries.

DPS officials confirmed the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A variety of factors can contribute to tractor-trailer crashes, including loss of vehicle control, tire failure, mechanical issues, excessive speed, improper braking, lane departure, and driver fatigue—especially in wet weather conditions like those reported in this incident.

According to the National Safety Council, 5,375 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes in 2023. While this reflects an 8.4% decrease from 2022, it still represents a 43% increase over the past decade, showing ongoing safety concerns involving commercial vehicles.

Candice Bond, an experienced semi-truck accident attorney, noted that investigations involving commercial truck crashes are often complex and involve multiple agencies. These investigations typically examine driver logs, maintenance records, roadway conditions, and electronic data from onboard systems.

“A skilled attorney can help protect a victim’s family from trucking companies, which often deploy their own investigators immediately after a crash and have significant resources to defend against claims of negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Curtis Allen Ford may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and funeral-related expenses following a catastrophic crash.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
