JOHNSON, IA, (June 28, 2026) – The Iowa State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a woman who was struck by two vehicles while standing in the travel lanes of Interstate 80 in Johnson County.
Yanelli J. Camarena, 28, was standing in the eastbound lanes near milepost 245 at approximately 1:05 a.m. on June 28 when an eastbound tractor-trailer struck her. A second eastbound vehicle, a 2025 Buick Enclave, subsequently struck her as well.
Camarena was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tractor-trailer involved in the crash was operated by XPO Logistics Freight Inc., based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash with assistance from the Iowa City Police Department, the Iowa City Fire Department, and the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
