Tony Waters Killed in Fort Smith Two-Vehicle Crash on Hwy 71

FORT SMITH, AR (June 20, 2026) — A Fort Smith man was killed Saturday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 71 in Sebastian County, according to the Arkansas State Police (ASP).

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 12:05 p.m. near the intersection of Towson Avenue and Zero Street.

A preliminary crash report states that 65-year-old Tony Waters was driving a 2003 Mazda when he entered Highway 71 from a private drive. His vehicle was struck by a southbound 2016 Dodge Ram.

Waters sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Ram remained at the scene following the crash and was not injured, according to investigators.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by the Arkansas State Police.

TWO-VEHICLE CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Each year, approximately 36,000 people lose their lives and another 1.9 million suffer injuries in motor vehicle crashes across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was the leading cause of fatal crashes in 2018, followed by alcohol, drugs or medication, failure to remain in the proper lane, failure to yield the right of way, and distracted driving.

While investigators continue working to determine the cause of the collision and any potential liability, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney, emphasized the importance of having an independent investigation conducted promptly to preserve evidence and protect the rights of victims and their families.

“In addition to the work completed by law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and texting records from the party believed to be at fault,” said Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“Time is critical in cases such as this, and the victim’s family should ensure that all available evidence is preserved and carefully reviewed.”

“An accident reconstruction team may also be necessary to determine exactly how the crash occurred. These investigative resources can play an important role in helping clients pursue financial compensation for their losses,” added Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Tony Waters may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal. “If your loved one’s death was caused by another party’s negligence, consulting with a wrongful death attorney can help you understand your legal options and pursue the justice you deserve.”

“Families coping with the loss of a loved one are often overwhelmed by the legal process designed to protect their rights. An experienced attorney can provide compassionate guidance throughout the case and help ensure they receive the restitution they may be entitled to.”
