Tony Vasquez Killed by DUI Fleeing Driver in Irving, TX

IRVING, TX — June 19, 2026 — A scooter rider died Thursday after being struck twice by an alleged impaired driver who then fled the scene of the crash at an Irving intersection, according to the Irving Police Department.

Tony Vasquez was riding a scooter at the intersection of Cantrell Street and Cibola Drive on June 19, 2026, when a vehicle struck him. A witness at the scene reported observing the driver hit Vasquez twice before fleeing without stopping to render aid.

Vasquez sustained multiple critical injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities later located the alleged driver, who told police he had consumed multiple beers while watching a World Cup match. The driver acknowledged knowing he had hit “something” but claimed he was unaware that he had struck a person.

The Irving Police Department is actively investigating the incident. No further information has been released at this time.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Texas ranks among the worst states in the nation for drunk driving, with impaired drivers responsible for more than 42% of all traffic deaths. In 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation reported over 26,000 alcohol-related crashes that resulted in 1,138 fatalities and thousands of injuries. This equates to roughly three Texans losing their lives each day due to impaired driving incidents.

An independent investigation will be required to determine other potential factors in the case, including blood-alcohol content levels.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, was interviewed and offered her perspective on incidents such as this.

“Separate from criminal charges, a victim may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and text records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide an injured victim during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights, while ensuring that a driver who takes the wheel under the influence is held fully accountable for their actions,” as reported by Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of a victim could have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families must endure, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will remain updated on the official investigation and work diligently to ensure that their legal rights and best interests are fully protected.”
