Tommy Watkins killed in semi crash in Pecos County TX

PECOS, TX, (March 28, 2026) — Two people were killed in a fiery crash involving a semi-truck and a pickup Saturday morning in Pecos County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Authorities said a 2005 Peterbilt tractor-trailer traveling southbound on Farm-to-Market Road 1776 crossed into oncoming traffic near mile marker 369 at about 6:30 a.m.

The semi collided with a northbound 2024 Ford F-150 driven by 54-year-old Tommy Dale Watkins of Thorntonville. Following the impact, the semi-truck caught fire.

Watkins died at the scene. The 57-year-old California man driving the semi also died in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

A fully loaded tractor-trailer can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, and when such a vehicle collides with a smaller passenger vehicle, the consequences are often devastating.

The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that about 150,000 people are injured in large truck crashes each year, with approximately 4,900 fatalities annually. These figures highlight the importance of increased awareness and stronger safety measures within the trucking industry.

Candice Bond, an experienced commercial accident attorney, stated that in cases like this, conducting a prompt and independent investigation is critical to protecting the rights of victims.

“Commercial vehicle accidents are often complex, with multiple contributing factors,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“An attorney can help protect victims from trucking companies, which often deploy their own investigators and have extensive resources to defend negligent drivers.

“A lawyer can advocate on behalf of victims by hiring expert witnesses, reviewing driver history, identifying witnesses, and examining insurance coverage, all while guiding families through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Tommy Watkins may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The emotional impact of losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed about the investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are safeguarded.”

“An attorney can also protect victims from large insurance companies and their legal teams while thoroughly reviewing the facts of the case. Legal representation ensures that families receive strong advocacy and fair compensation.”
