DPS: Toby Robbins Dies, 5 Hurt in U.S. 385 Crash in Oldham

Oldham, TX (June 27, 2026) — One person died and five others, including two juveniles, were injured in a head-on collision Saturday night on U.S. 385 south of the Hartley County line in Oldham County, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The deceased was identified as 47-year-old Pottsboro resident Toby Robbins.

DPS said a 22-year-old man from Pharr was driving a Volkswagen Atlas northbound in the southbound lane at approximately 11:40 p.m. when he collided head-on with a Nissan Armada, which was towing a trailer. Following the crash, the Volkswagen veered off the roadway and overturned.

Robbins, who was driving the Nissan, died at the scene. Four passengers in the Nissan, ages 46, 18, 15, and 14, were hospitalized, including one who sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

This remains an ongoing investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Head-on crashes occur less frequently compared to other types of accidents but are often deadly, causing a disproportionately high number of fatalities and severe injuries due to the combined force of impact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 39,345 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, said that in cases like this, it’s critical to have a seasoned lawyer conduct an independent investigation into the crash in order to protect the rights of the victim’s family.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together exactly what happened. All of these resources play a vital role in helping clients secure fair monetary compensation for damages or losses following a collision,” said Bond.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of Toby Robbins may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this one.

“The grief and sorrow that come with losing a loved one in an accident can be truly overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand exactly what families are forced to go through, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential.”
