SMITH, TX, (May 22, 2026) – A single-vehicle crash in Smith County on Thursday morning resulted in one fatality and left a teenage passenger injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol.
Authorities said the crash occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on State Highway 31 near Surrey Trail. A silver GMC Sierra pickup truck was traveling westbound when the driver, an 18-year-old from Tyler, veered off the roadway to the north. The vehicle then rolled multiple times before coming to rest in a tree line.
The driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Toby Cook, 17, of Tyler, who was riding as a passenger in the truck, was injured in the crash and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Officials said the crash remains under investigation by DPS.
