Terry Purvis killed in Garden City Route 26 head-on collision, GSP says

GARDEN CITY, GA, (January 08, 2026) — A head-on collision Thursday afternoon in Garden City claimed the life of a Chatham County man, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Troopers said a Nissan Titan was traveling eastbound on Route 26 near Sharon Park Drive around 1:26 p.m. when it failed to maintain its lane and crossed into westbound traffic.

The Nissan struck a Ford F-150 pickup truck head-on. The driver of the Ford, identified as Terry Purvis, 27, of Rincon, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to an area hospital with unspecified injuries. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Driver error is the leading cause of head-on collisions, though factors such as speeding, distracted or impaired driving, roadway design issues, and driver inexperience may also contribute to these serious crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 40,901 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes across the United States in 2023. This marked a 4.3% decline from 2022 and represented the second consecutive annual decrease.

“Investigators carefully review contributing factors such as road conditions, lighting, and visibility,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In certain cases, accident reconstruction experts are brought in to determine how a collision unfolded. These investigative tools are essential in helping victims’ families pursue compensation after a fatal crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Terry Purvis may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek damages related to loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a tragic accident.

“The grief and stress experienced after losing a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“Our firm understands the challenges families face during these difficult times. A wrongful death attorney can remain informed on the official investigation and work to protect the family’s legal rights and best interests,” Bond stated.
