Terrence Covington dies after Jennings roadway collision

JENNINGS, MO, (May 23, 2026) – A 40-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle in Jennings, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

Authorities identified the victim as Terrence Covington of the 5700 block of Hodiamont Avenue.

Police said officers were dispatched at approximately 1:44 a.m. to the area near West Florissant Avenue and Carl Avenue following reports of a pedestrian crash.

When officers arrived, they found Covington lying in the southbound lanes of West Florissant Avenue with serious injuries.

Investigators later determined that Covington had been standing in the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver involved remained at the location and cooperated with investigators, police said.

The St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons and Accident Reconstruction unit continues to investigate the collision. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact St. Louis County Police at 636-529-8210.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Despite protections provided under traffic laws, pedestrians remain among the most vulnerable individuals on roadways throughout the country. Every day, pedestrians like Terrence Covington are seriously injured or killed in crashes involving distracted, impaired, or negligent drivers.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), at least 7,508 pedestrians were killed in roadway crashes across the United States in 2022. The report included data from every state except Oklahoma, which did not participate in the study.

Several factors can contribute to deadly pedestrian accidents, including distracted driving, speeding, failure to yield, and other negligent driving behaviors.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, said that in cases like this, it is important for victims’ families to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to help preserve evidence and protect their rights.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important in order to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and the national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping those who have lost a loved one receive the justice that they deserve.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Terrence Covington may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a tragic accident.

“In most instances, pedestrians possess the right of way when crossing an intersection or a street regardless if they are in a marked crosswalk. It is always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

Formica noted, “Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time, and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”

“Although no amount of money can make up for a devastating loss of a loved one, it is important that the family be made aware of their rights and what they are entitled to by law,” added Formica.
