Teresa Bretherick dies after Jeep crash in Lauderdale County on U.S. 43

LAUDERDALE, AL, (April 30, 2026) – Teresa D. Bretherick, a Tennessee resident, died Thursday morning following a two-vehicle crash along U.S. Highway 43 in Lauderdale County.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the collision occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. near the intersection of County Line Road 73. Authorities said a Jeep Cherokee struck a Jeep Wrangler, causing the driver of the Wrangler to be ejected from the vehicle.

Bretherick, of Saint Joseph, Tennessee, was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital for emergency treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.

A 57-year-old passenger traveling with Bretherick, from Florence, was also airlifted for medical care. Additionally, two 18-year-old occupants of the Cherokee sustained injuries and were hospitalized, ALEA reported.

State troopers are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

The Alabama Department of Transportation’s 2023 Crash Facts report shows that 975 traffic fatalities occurred statewide in 2023. It also indicates a crash was reported every 3 minutes and 38 seconds, with a fatality occurring roughly every 8 hours and 55 minutes. These statistics underscore the persistent dangers on Alabama roadways and the need for cautious driving.

Common contributing factors in crashes include speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

“Roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting may all play a role and must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are required to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are critical in helping victims or their families secure compensation after a serious crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Teresa Bretherick may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims in fatal accidents can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“The grief and emotional toll after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face during such times, and it is essential to protect their rights. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation closely and work to ensure that the family’s legal interests are fully represented.”
