Teen cyclist hurt in Huntington bus–e-bike collision, driver Santa Cabrera-Toribio

HUNTINGTON, NY – April 15, 2026 – A 15-year-old boy was critically injured Wednesday evening following a collision involving a school minibus and an e-bike in Huntington, New York, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Authorities said the teen was riding a Jasion e-bike northbound on Broadway near Little Plains Road at approximately 4:48 p.m. when he entered the intersection and collided with a westbound Type-A school minibus driven by Santa Cabrera-Toribio, 46, of Brentwood.

The impact left the teenager severely injured. He was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital for emergency treatment.

Police confirmed that the driver and a passenger inside the minibus were not injured in the crash.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities at 631-854-8252.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Bus accidents often pose serious risks to cyclists and pedestrians due to the large size of buses and the limited visibility experienced by drivers operating such vehicles.

Multiple contributing factors may lead to incidents like this, including distracted driving, fatigue, mechanical issues, or human error. In some cases, insufficient training or inexperience in handling large passenger vehicles can also play a role. Each year in the United States, around 60,000 bus-related crashes occur, resulting in injuries to numerous individuals.

Candice Bond, an experienced bus accident attorney, emphasized the importance of an immediate independent investigation to safeguard the rights of those affected.

“Bus collisions are frequently complex, with several possible contributing causes,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“A qualified attorney can help protect victims from transportation companies that often deploy their own investigative teams quickly and have substantial resources to defend against negligence claims.”

Bond added that legal counsel may assist by engaging expert witnesses, reviewing driver records, identifying witnesses, and analyzing insurance coverage while guiding victims through the legal process.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the injured victim may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that recovery from serious injuries often brings emotional, financial, and personal strain that can affect every aspect of life.

“It is essential for injured individuals to obtain legal representation when pursuing a personal injury claim so they can properly negotiate with insurance providers,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies are often reluctant to absorb the full costs associated with serious injuries. Legal representation ensures victims are protected and helps hold responsible parties accountable for negligence,” he added.
