Teen e-bike rider hospitalized after Honolulu Highway accident

HONOLULU, HI, (May 18, 2026) – A 19-year-old electric bicycle rider suffered severe injuries Monday morning following a collision involving a vehicle on Kamehameha Highway, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Officials said the crash occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. along the highway. Emergency crews responded to the scene and found the young man with serious injuries following the collision.

EMS personnel treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital for additional medical care.

Authorities have not yet released further information regarding the circumstances that led to the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.

E-BIKE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Bicyclists remain especially vulnerable on roadways, and drivers should always use caution when traveling near them.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), injuries and deaths involving e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards treated in emergency rooms have increased significantly in recent years. A study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), found that 23,493 people suffered injuries in e-bike crashes in 2022, a sharp rise from the 751 reported in 2017.

“Bicyclists are particularly exposed on the roadway, and a variety of factors can contribute to serious collisions,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“It is important to determine the precise cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review insurance coverage, retain expert witnesses, conduct background investigations, and identify witnesses. We carefully help guide victims and families through the legal process.”

Bond, an experienced bicycle accident attorney, added that prompt independent investigations are often necessary to preserve important evidence.

“In addition to reviewing a police report, an attorney will thoroughly examine all factors that may have contributed to the collision,” Bond said. “A lawyer can hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks, locate witnesses, and review insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help injury victims navigate what is often a complicated process.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

The victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending the outcome of the investigation.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said, “Victims injured in bicycle and e-bike collisions frequently pursue personal injury claims to recover compensation for medical expenses, future treatment, lost wages, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies are often unconcerned about the growing financial burdens injured victims face. An attorney can help protect victims and work to hold negligent parties accountable while pursuing the compensation they deserve,” Bond added.
