Passenger Tamya Barnett dies in Columbus single-car collision

COLUMBUS, OH, (November 22, 2025) — A 20-year-old woman died early Monday following a single-vehicle crash on Stelzer Road in Columbus.

Police said Tamya Barnett was a passenger in a 2019 Mazda6 traveling southbound when the driver lost control at about 3:23 a.m., veered off the right side of the roadway, and struck an electric pole near Codet Road in the Somerset neighborhood.

Barnett was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later died from her injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

In many single-vehicle crashes like the one that claimed Ms. Barnett’s life, the driver is often found responsible. These types of collisions are commonly linked to driver error, excessive speed, impaired driving, or other forms of unsafe behavior. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), about 53 percent of all fatal crashes nationwide involve just one vehicle.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, noted that many of these tragedies are preventable. She emphasized that, in addition to the work performed by law enforcement, an independent investigation by a skilled attorney is crucial to preserve key evidence for the victim’s family.

“Time is critical in circumstances like this, and a grieving family must ensure that all evidence is reviewed promptly,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Alongside law enforcement efforts, an attorney will assess potential contributing factors, consult expert witnesses, review driver history, locate additional witnesses, and examine available insurance coverage. A dedicated attorney can guide a family through an overwhelming time while protecting their rights and best interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of Tamya Barnett may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Loved ones of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages after a devastating accident such as this.

“The emotional burden after losing a family member in a crash can be extremely difficult,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “Families deserve to have their rights safeguarded. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and work to ensure the family’s legal interests are fully protected throughout the process.”
