Susan Darst dies in Perry OK crash with OSU softball team

PERRY, OK, (April 08, 2026) — A tragic pedestrian crash involving an Oklahoma State University softball team bus claimed the life of a 62-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon near Perry, authorities said.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Susan Lee Darst was walking along the east shoulder of northbound Interstate 35 near mile marker 187 in Noble County when she was struck by the bus. Darst, a resident of Oklahoma City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials reported that the bus driver sustained injuries in the collision, while all 35 passengers—members of the Cowgirls softball team—escaped unharmed. The incident remains under active investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Walking on American roads has become increasingly hazardous in recent years, largely due to the rise of heavier vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, speed-oriented road design, and unsafe driver behavior. Eighty-four percent of pedestrian deaths in 2023 occurred in urban areas, up from 59% in 1975, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

“In most cases, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing a street or intersection, regardless of whether it is marked,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized that in situations like this, an independent investigation by an experienced attorney is crucial to safeguard the victim’s rights.

“Proper resources are vital in any pedestrian crash investigation to ensure that evidence is gathered, analyzed, and documented correctly, allowing authorities to determine if negligence was a factor,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Susan Lee Darst may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim for the loss of love and companionship.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in a tragic accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face during such times, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help safeguard their legal interests.”
