Steven Cornett Fatally Struck in I-74 Construction Zone in Champaign Co

CHAMPAIGN, IL, (May 27, 2026) – Steven A. Cornett, 65, of Danville, tragically lost his life Wednesday morning in a construction-zone accident along Interstate 74 in Champaign County, according to Illinois State Police.

Troopers responded shortly after 3:30 a.m. to eastbound I-74 at milepost 179 after reports that a pickup truck pulling a trailer entered an active construction zone and struck a roadway worker.

Emergency personnel pronounced Cornett dead at the scene. The Champaign County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity.

Authorities noted that Cornett previously served as the police chief for the village of Tilton.

The driver of the pickup truck has not been publicly identified, and investigators have not yet released details regarding potential contributing factors in the crash.

Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the fatal collision.

WORK ZONE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Work zones remain among the most hazardous areas on roadways, where workers face serious risks from speeding motorists, distracted drivers, and vehicles failing to comply with lane closures or reduced-speed limits. Despite cones, warning signs, and protective barriers, road crews often work only a short distance from moving traffic, leaving little room for error when drivers fail to slow down or drift from their lanes.

Collisions in work zones frequently lead to catastrophic injuries and fatalities, highlighting the importance of motorists remaining attentive, reducing speed, and obeying all posted construction-zone warnings.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must be thoroughly examined. These procedures are necessary for helping those who have lost a loved one receive the justice that they deserve,” Bond added.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of a victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” said Formica.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately help guide a family through this difficult period while protecting their legal rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements for far less than a case may actually be worth,” Formica noted. “However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for clients to help ensure they are treated fairly and properly compensated.”
