Stavan Facey Dies in Manatee County I-75 Crash, FHP Says

MANATEE, FL, (April 20, 2026) — A tractor-trailer driver was killed Monday morning in a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 75 in Manatee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Authorities said the crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-75 just south of State Road 64. Investigators reported that an 18-year-old driver in a 2022 Ford Mustang was allegedly weaving through traffic when he entered the middle lane and struck an SUV.

The impact forced the SUV into the path of a tractor-trailer, causing the commercial vehicle to overturn.

The truck driver, identified as 34-year-old Stavan Albert Facey of New Smyrna Beach, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV driver suffered minor injuries.

FHP stated that the Mustang driver initially stopped briefly but then fled the scene southbound. Authorities later located and impounded the vehicle. The driver was arrested and faces charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

The investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

Florida continues to face significant challenges with hit-and-run crashes. In 2023, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported 104,273 hit-and-run incidents statewide, resulting in 271 deaths and 871 serious injuries. Pedestrians and bicyclists accounted for a large portion of these fatalities. Despite enforcement efforts, Florida remains among the states with the highest number of hit-and-run cases, highlighting an ongoing public safety concern.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, said that in cases like this it is critical to conduct a prompt and independent investigation to protect the rights of the victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important in order to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and roadway lighting are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully examined. These steps are necessary to ensure families receive justice and fair compensation after a devastating loss.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Stavan Facey may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. This may include compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, emotional distress, and other damages resulting from the fatal crash.

“An incident is considered a wrongful death when a person or entity commits a negligent or wrongful act resulting in death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

He added that when fatalities result from reckless driving behaviors such as speeding, distraction, aggressive driving, or DUI, surviving family members often have the legal right to pursue a civil claim against the responsible party.
