Stacy Abernathy died in wrong-way accident on I-26 in Inman

INMAN, SC, (April 24, 2026) – A 52-year-old driver was killed and a truck driver injured early Friday morning in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Stacy Lee Abernathy was operating a 2013 Ford Transit van eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-26 at approximately 3:24 a.m. when the vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming Kenworth tractor-trailer near mile marker 9 in Inman.

Abernathy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Crashes like this can often be prevented when motorists follow traffic laws, but tragically, that was not the case here.

Wrong-way driving poses a serious danger to everyone on the roadway and can result from several factors, including driver error, distraction, or poor roadway design.

NTSB data indicates that approximately 75 percent of all wrong-way crashes involve drivers who are under the influence.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully reviewed,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, an accident reconstruction team is required to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are critical in helping victims or their families obtain compensation after a serious crash,” added Bond, a prominent auto accident attorney.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the investigation, the injured victim may be eligible to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explained that the emotional and financial toll after a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting many aspects of a person’s life.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when pursuing a personal injury claim, as legal representation allows for negotiations with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies are often indifferent to the growing expenses faced by an injured individual. An attorney can help ensure victims are treated fairly and work to secure appropriate compensation,” he added.
